Intro to Urban Sketching! Seeing the World, One Drawing at a Time!

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Herrick North Branch

Description

Join Maker-in-Residence Marcia Schrotenboer for a hands-on introduction to Urban Sketching - a fun, expressive, and accessible way to capture the world around you through drawing.

In this session, you’ll learn about the global Urban Sketchers movement, and our local chapter, Urban Sketchers West Michigan and how communities come together in person and online to share their unique views of the world, one sketch at a time.

No experience needed! We’ll explore how simple, wonky, wiggly, even silly marks on paper can come together to tell a story - your story, my story, our story. Every voice matters, and every sketch is a celebration of personal perspective. Re”mark”able? Absolutely. (Pun intended! 🤣)

All supplies are provided, and participants will leave with a starter sketching kit.

About Marcia Schrotenboer:

Marcia's journey as an artist began during her time as the activity director at Freedom Village, where she found inspiration in resident Ruth Donaldson who enjoyed sketching. With the thought, "I wish I could do that," she made a decision that would shape her creative path: to be creative every day. From that perspective, sketching became both practice and meditation-an endeavor that has now filled over 75 sketchbooks. Her belief that creativity is inherent in everyone shines through her work, encouraging others to find their own artistic voice.

Driven by this philosophy of shared creativity, Marcia founded the Urban Sketchers of West Michigan-starting as its only member. Today, it has grown to a thriving community of over 750 sketchers, united by a passion for art, place, and connection. She regularly shares her artwork on Instagram, @a_cup_of_happy.
